Welcome to Baine's Books and Coffee.  We are an independent, community bookstore and coffee shop located in historic Appomattox, Virginia.  We have a unique collection of books, music, films, pottery, food, and drink that we think fit our community and region.  Come listen to live music, drop by for lunch, or get us to search for a rare book for you.  If you are too far away, you will soon be able to shop online.

Coffee

We use beans roasted in Lexington, Virginia by a meticulous, award winning roaster (Lexington Coffee Roasting Company).  We receive beans weekly and never use or sell beans roasted more than two weeks ago.  We offer a full range of espresso drinks, made by our well trained and careful baristas.  We use quality, real ingredients like homemade whipped cream and Ghirardelli chocolate.

Bluegrass

This is a Bluegrass town and that's why we live here.  We are a world-class Bluegrass store with one of the best selections in the country (805 titles and counting).  We also stock Old-Time, Folk, Americana, Alt-Country, World Music, and Celtic titles.

Live Music

From the start we wanted to be the headquarters for the local acoustic music scene.  In five years we have hosted over 815 nights of live music. Every Thursday is open mic night.  Every first Sunday of the month we host a jazz lunch.   We have live acoustic music every Friday and Saturday night.  Styles include bluegrass, folk, americana, old-time, blues, country, gospel, and Jazz.  Our venue has a comfortable listening room atmosphere that is smoke and alcohol free.  Check out our calendar to the left.

Books

We carry all types of used books and a targeted selection of new books.  Our used books are reasonably priced and well organized.  You can bring in your old books and exchange them for trade credit to spend on other used books.  We stock new books in subject areas that fit the community and our personal interests.  We specialize in The Civil War, The American South, Classics, Shakespeare, Poetry, Art, Film, Outdoor Skills, Children's Classics, Historic Preservation, C.S. Lewis, and Local Author/Interest.  We also keep a revolving stock of hand-picked budget books at steeply discounted prices.  We special order books, in or out of print, every day.  

Food

We have good stuff to eat.  Pick up a cookie, scone, or muffin to go with your coffee.  We bake daily in our shop.  For lunch and weekday dinner we have panini grilled sandwiches, salad, and homemade quiche, Lasagna, or soup.  On Friday and Saturday nights we serve a one-dish-dinner to go with our live music.  All homemade, we feature Red Beans and Rice, Chili, Pasta, Stew, and other dishes.  Call ahead to see what we are making any given night.

Pottery

We sell pottery made right here in the county, most of it by our staff.  Cups, pitchers, bowls, and every other possible clay piece are available.  You can talk with the artist who made it.  The styles vary with the potter.

Films

Baine's stocks a small but unique collection of DVDs.  You will find things you won't see anywhere else.  We specialize in Civil War, Bluegrass, Shakespeare, Hollywood Musicals, the American South, and quality children's films.
